4725mag's daily fashion essentials: plussed-up basics


A leather jacket, your favorite jeans and a crisp white shirt; it doesn't get better than the basics done right. Especially when they come in a fresh and simple - yet far from basic - play on a neutral palette. The style stars are so aligning on this one, guys.


Let's talk about this white, button-down shirt and the fact we are not usually the crisp, white shirt type. However, we left our comfort zone for this Madewell number. It boasts a subtle burn-out, polka dot pattern, an O/S silhouette and petite collar. This elevates the shirt from being not just a closet classic to a modern, totally on-point piece to wear now and keep for later.


Denim; it is in some form or another, a part of our every day. These particular jeans - by Levi's Made and Crafted - are reminiscent in both wash and cut of a vintage pair of their older sister, the 501. Though these are constructed from soft, brushed and washed to perfection denim which supplies a touch of luxe that is all modern. 


To cap this off impeccably, you need a solid jacket. And what's better than a leather bomber -  a leather bomber in a soft, cool blush nonetheless? We eyed this jacket, purchased at Gap, for weeks before pulling the trigger. Looking back on that decision, we are not sure why. There could have been many more stylish days in our history if we'd just spent the $300 sooner, but eh. You live and you learn. The details are so simple yet well executed in this piece and as it's lined with a medium weight cotton, it will get annual wear in our Northern California clime.

Key style takeaway: plus up your seasonal closet with some solid basics. Go out of your comfort zone and sample even just a little color. We tried it, we liked it and we'll never go back.

4725mag's latest fashion crush: Sky | Oak Co.


Oakland; you either get it or you don't. 

Despite being the only city by the bay to us - it is and always will be the underdog of the Bay Area. We don't want to knock San Francisco, actually having lived there ourselves for almost four years upon moving to the US from the UK - but it never felt like home the way Oakland does. We've been here for the past five years and we're here for good.




Oakland knows it is the best. Yet somehow, it has to fight for recognition despite knowing it has nothing to prove. If you live here, you get this and you know. It is a palpable energy and you feel it. 


Sky | Oak Co. pieces simply and effortlessly encompass the guts and the soul that make The Town who it is. Their designs are kept sleek, modern and unfussy. Color palettes are kept neutral and cool and their fits are timeless. A few ladies options exist, but their guy offerings can very easily be cuffed, partially tucked in and worn unisex.

4725mag's daily fashion essentials: arm candy to get giddy over, little tufts of joy


We like our jewelry matte, minimal, angular and with simple geometric shapes. Literally, we had to be still our beating hearts when we found this tufted, muted gold and silver bracelet on sale at Madewell for a mere $12.


The tufts add just the right touch of springtime - dare I say it - flare, but their neutral navy and rust (currently our most coveted accent) coloring keep it within our minimalist comfort zone.

While we can't guarantee this exact piece is still in stock, Madewell make it easy for those of us usually afraid of any flounce to try this look that is only growing in popularity for SS15.They have various pieces that cater to the tufted jewelry trend that are also minimal, classic and tomboy safe. Phew.

4725mag's essential eats: rolled oats, banana and chia energizer breakfast bowl

With keep-you-full-until-lunch fiber, courtesy of our friend the rolled oat, potassium packed bananas, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and protein via the chia seeds and flax, this recipe is an evolution of a gluten free, rolled oats recipe that a nutritionist gave us a few years ago.

We periodically try a new topping or choice of dairy, but this is our favorite, tried and true version. Making this dish in bulk ensures it's ready to grab and go throughout the week as we're running out of the door 5 minutes late on busy weekday mornings. 


 Ingredients, makes 5 servings:
- 4 bananas
- 4 cups of almond milk (or whatever your dairy preference!)
- 2 heaped cups of rolled oats
- 1/2 cup of chia seeds
- 1/2 cup of ground flax seeds
- teaspoon of ginger
- teaspoon of cinnamon
- pinch of salt

Toppings:
- raw sunflower seeds
- raw pumpkin seeds
- dried cranberries


Directions:
We like to whip this up on a Sunday morning before heading out for a run or brunch. You can find us brewing some coffee, listening to a record and taking just a few minutes to ensure we have breakfast for an entire week.

Start by slicing the banana into your blender or food processor - mashing by hand with a fork or potato masher also totally works - then add your choice of dairy and blend until almost smooth.

Add all the other ingredients to a 1L Tupperware box and pour the banana-almond milk mixture over the top, stir wet and dry ingredients together thoroughly to ensure the cinnamon and ginger are evenly distributed. Apply the lid, pop in the fridge and enjoy the other half of your weekend.

...Yuck, it's Monday. We're sorry, but at least you have a delicious breakfast to look forward to. Take the oats mixture out of the fridge, remove the lid and score it - the oats and chia seeds will have now swollen up, drinking in all that wonderful banana-almond milk - into five portions. Scoop out one of them into a microwave safe mason jar and add a tablespoon or two of each of the toppings.

Upon getting into work, pop this puppy in the microwave for 1.5 minutes, stir and enjoy. If you're at home (lucky you!) scoop your serving into a small saucepan, heat on medium while stirring for 5 minutes - or until warmed through - and add your toppings upon plating.

Repeat for the next 4 days, your tummy and long term well being will thank you.
